Focus & Fixes - Aging

We can't avoid ageing, but we can delay it. Here's the 101.

Structure to function changes

Ageing causes structural changes in the outer and inner skin layers.

Fine lines and dryness are caused by overall reduction in sebum levels, while deeper wrinkles and laxity are a result of collagen/elastin/hyaluronic acid breakdown in the inner dermis.

Daily routine focus

Exfoliate

  • AHAs
  • Glycolic acid is particularly great at promoting skin renewal to reduce lines, stimulate collagen formation and improve efficacy of subsequent products.

Treat

  • Antioxidants
  • Antioxidants (e.g. Vitamins C, E, CoQ10) neutralise damaging free radicals that causes cell ageing. Their effects are pronounced when used in combination. Vitamin C also assists in collagen production.

  • Retinoids
  • Vitamin A and derivatives speed up cell turnover, smoothing out fine lines. They are potent, so always start slow!

Moisturise

  • Barrier-enhancing emollients
  • Incorporating barrier-rebuilding emollients (e.g. lanolin, squalane) and nourishing plant oils with varying omega 3,6,9 fatty acid content (e.g. kiwi, argan, oat oils) to reduce water loss.

Sun Protection

UV is the biggest contributor to skin ageing. Daily broad spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB is critical.

Other tips

For pronounced wrinkles elimination and skin tightening, consider resurfacing laser treatments. They directly stimulate collagen synthesis in the deeper dermis layer, where it's difficult for topical products to reach. For best results, always consult your dermatologist.

Effective anti-ageing is essentially about having a good routine with ingredients proven to work. It's never too early or late to look after your skin, so start today!
