Focus & Fixes – Acne Scarring
After the worst of acne is over, the next challenge is eliminating scars.
Pits and PIH
Post-acne scarring affects both skin texture and tone.
Pits (or ‘ice pick scars’) are usually caused by cystic acne which destroyed parts of the underlying collagen/elastin. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) are dark red/brown/purple areas, caused by skin trauma such as picking or infection.
Daily routine focus
The following actives reduce hyperpigmentation by inhibiting melanin production or transfer. They work best in combination. Vitamin C and AHAs are also capable of promoting collagen synthesis, which help with filling out of pitted scars.
- hydroquinione, arbutin – not recommended prolonged use
- kojic acid, phytic acid, azelaic acid
- vitamin C and derivatives
- vitamin E and derivatives
- vitamin A and derivatives
- niacinamide (vitamin B3)
- AHAs – glycolic acid, lactic acid
Sun protection
Limiting UV exposure is essential in preventing/fading hyperpigmentation, as UV stimulates melanin production. Ensure you’re protected against both UVA and UVB.
Other tips
If the damage runs deeper into the dermis layer, more intensive procedures will be required for dramatic improvements. Consulting a dermatologist is important before going ahead any.
- Ablative and non-ablative lasers
- Skin needling
- Deep chemical peels
Though scar revision is no overnight success, patience, persistence and protection will always pay off.
