Origins from the Resurrection Plant
This fascinating ingredient has fascinating origins. Glycoin® is the key to the unique resilience of the desert resurrection plant Myrothamnus flabellifolia. Resurrection plants have the ability to withstand long periods of drought and extreme weather conditions; during which it completely desiccates, appearing withered and dead. So what exactly is Glycoin®? It is a type of extremolyte, which is a type of stress-protection molecule preventing membrane damage, thus allowing plants and organisms to live in lethal conditions of extreme dryness and temperatures such as deserts, salt lakes, artic ice or hot springs. Chemically, Glycoin® is a small polysaccharide (or sugar) belonging to a group of compounds called glyceryl glucosides.
Glycoin® consists of a specific type of glyceryl glycoside present exclusively in the desert resurrection plant Myrothamnus flabellifolia and blue-green algae Spirulina. It is exclusively manufactured in Germany, with a high degree of purity by a patented reaction utilising all natural starting materials. It also has excellent stability, which means it remains active long after its production and incorporation into cosmetic products.
